I believe that good, no, great graphics are essential for an excellent gaming experience. For this purpose comes, microsoft's DirectX, it is an application which greatly increases the graphics and sound quality of games.
The latest release on DirectX is its DirectX 10, which i believe is essential for all games, many dont care about that, thats where they are wrong. Games can work without them, but if you have bought a game then its your right to enjoy it to the fullest. See yourself how it improves the games' graphics:

Its amazing how much the graphics have been improved.
The problem is that DirectX 10 can only be installed on Windows Vista (or Later) and only on the genuine (uncracked) version of Vista (I m talking about Pakistanis).

There is also a cracked edition of DirectX 10 for Windows XP, available here, but i recommend not using it although it is working fine on my WinXP and has increased the graphics of Gears of War Game (by Windows Live Games) because its CRACKED.

If you download the cracked version do it for only trying or testing purposes, if you like it then install the genuine version on genuine windows. I am completely against these cracked stuff, (unless i am using it-kidding).
You need a DirectX 10 compatible Graphics card to use it. The main are:
All Nvidia Ge-Force Model #s greater than 8300
All Nvidia Ge-Force GTX Series (> year2008)
All ATI Radeon HD 2000 Series and greater
